Faroe Islands: Where Every Stay Tells a Story

Published on 15 June 2026 at 15:25

Dramatic cliffs, misty fjords, and charming villages make the Faroe Islands one of Europe's most captivating destinations. Just as memorable as the scenery is where you stay, from traditional turf-roofed cottages and seaside guesthouses to modern hotels with breathtaking views.

The exact number of places to stay changes regularly because of holiday homes, guesthouses, apartments and new tourism developments, but the Faroe Islands have a surprisingly wide range of accommodation for such a small destination.

Current tourism statistics show accommodation is spread across:

  • Hotels
  • Guesthouses
  • Hostels
  • Seaside cottages
  • Self-catering apartments
  • Traditional turf-roof houses
  • B&Bs and local homestays

The capital, Tórshavn, has the largest concentration of accommodation, while smaller villages across the islands offer guesthouses, cottages and holiday homes. Recent tourism figures recorded nearly 95,000 annual check-ins at hotels, hostels and guesthouses alone, demonstrating a growing accommodation sector despite the islands having fewer than 55,000 residents.

For any visitor, the real attraction is the variety. You can stay:
🏡 In a traditional Faroese cottage by the sea
🌿 In a grass-roofed village house
🏨 In a modern hotel overlooking the fjords
🚜 On a working sheep farm
🏘️ In a self-catering apartment in a remote village

One of the reasons the Faroe Islands remain special is that tourism infrastructure is growing carefully rather than becoming overdeveloped. The islands receive around 130,000 visitors annually, but still retain an authentic, uncrowded feel.

For an Íjénjèm-style trip, I would recommend splitting your stay between:

  • Tórshavn (culture, restaurants, museums)
  • Sørvágur or nearby Vágar (waterfalls, airport convenience, iconic landscapes)
  • A remote village stay such as Gjógv for the full Faroese experience.
